Here are some answers to a few of the common questions we often get asked. Please feel free to contact us if you want more information.
LIFU is a complimentary therapy designed to minimise pain, swelling and stiffness. It has no detrimental side effects. In mild cases it can completely replace the need for pain relieving drugs. It compliments most pain relieving drugs, and often allows for their dose to be reduced.
Low Intesity Focused Ultrasound (LIFU) is a new generation of therapeutic ultrasound. Therapeutic ultrasound has been recognised as an effective treatment for soft tissue injuries for many years. Its benefits are to increase blood flow to tissue thus speeding up the healing process, decrease pain by reducing swelling and to gently massage the area relieving tension and softening scar tissue.
Yes and more is being done. For more information see attached documents.

LIFU is a lower frequency than conventional ultrasound (such as used for scanning babies), which allows the ultrasound beam to penetrate to deeper tissues. It has a pulsed and continuous setting allowing for both a thermal and non-thermal effect. The ultrasound beam is focused which allows for more targeted treatment of deep tissue areas aswell as allowing effective treatment of joint pathologies such as osteoarthritis.
After an assement of your animal ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area and then a gentle massaging with the ultrasound probe.
Each treatment course is tailored to the specific requirements of your animal and how they respond.
It depends on the area being treated, usually between 5 – 20 minutes.
Generally not, some animals may feel an odd sensation and might fidget a little until the settings are adjusted to suit them.
Occasionally some stiffness is experienced after the first treatment, but this soon passes.
Conditions where LIFU treatment has been beneficial include:
- Muscle strains
- Soft tissue scarring
- Elbow/Hip dysplasia
- Treatment of muscular pain
- Post orthopaedic surgery
- Tendon injuries
- Improve joint mobility
- Treatment of bone pain
No. Generous application of ultrasound gel is sufficient.
Price is dependant on the treatment regime required, but please contact us for further information.
Most insurance companies will cover therapeutic ultrasound if a vet recommends it, but individual policies vary so it is always best to check.
